Hi
I'm off to live in heart of Yorkshire Dales in the New Year. Anybody know of a windsurfing club down that way (afraid it would be pretty much beginner level as not sailed in while)

You couldn't be moving at a better time - the Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club has recently opened using Grimwith Reservoir as its base.  The £700k clubhouse and facilities are top class even if the weather can be a bit "grim" at times.  The club has a healthy windsurfing membership and you will be made very welcome.  I understand you can sail on a day permit basis.  The club is situated on the Grassington road out of Pately Bridge and is a couple of miles past Stump Cross Caverns on the right

Jayne,

I used to sail Grimwith all the time when I lived in
Leeds and it is a great spot albeit quite remote. Not
sure how suitable it is for pure beginners and what kit
they have available post-£700k lottery dole out but I can
whole heartedly recommend the home baking and friendly
Yorkshire people

Another place to consider if you're happy to go a little
bit further is Pugney's Country Park at Wakefield just of
the M1, this is a subsidised council run centre. The
sailing conditions are less challenging than Grimwith but
no cakes last time I was there.

If you go East there used to be some sailing that went on
at Scaling Damn but not sure whether that still going -
google it I guess.

Grimwith is closed end Feb to 1st may. Official opening days are sat/sun and wed evenings from 6ish. Midweek we have a buddy system which is for officialy members only, but if you want to sail most would not turn you away. Memership is pretty expensive at £120? unless you are going to sail there reguarly, but you can pay a daily fee.Grimwith works in SW thru N to E wind directions. Best direction is WSW to NW for clean wind. Up at Grimwith, there is usualy a +1bft more than forecast. A bizare thermal effect sets up occasionaly in a F3/4 westerly if it is hot over the vale of York you can be on a 4m sail!

Another inland option is Beaver Sailing Club. This is a feeder reservoir for the canal system (don't drink the water!). It is near Snaith of the M62 twixt hull and leeds. It has a decent size main lake and a smaller lake (also used as speed strip as the separating wall makes the water super flat even when very windy) to which the windsurfers are relegated during Dingy races at the weekend, nice showers and grassed rigging area, wind is good except from the North I think? This place is excellent for gybing practice having clean wind and flat water, may even be good for an evening after work sail during the summer. I have not sailed there for a while but you could pay a day sailing fee at the time.

Pugneys has a reputation of terribly gusty wind, never sailed there. There is Halifax Sailing club, which is a decent size with an active windsurfing membership and there is another smaller reservoir to the east of leeds run by windsurfers, but you would have to check with ROHO for details.

For the East yorkshire coast Fraisthorpe is the main spot, 2 miles south of Bridlington. It is similar in conditions to D-bay, worth checking out in a n-nw wind /swell as it can produce some excellent wave sailing. Redcar main beach is cross shore in a westerly. The Garre at the mouth of the estuary is a tidal lagoon which I belive works in NW and SW winds. I have also sailed in a northerly inside the estuary when the sea was too heavy at a small horse-shoe shaped bay The swell reforms in the bay, which you sail accrss with jumping on the way out and riding on the far side.

The west coast has options too. I have sailed Fleetwood 70 mile trip?, north of Blackpool on occasions. Rhosneiger is a favorite, 3hr drive / 180miles but well worth it for quality sailing and reliable wind.

Depending on where you are, theres Thornton Watlass Sailing club.

Its a small lake mainly used by dinghy sailors, in fact I think I'm the only windsurfer buts its handy for me as I'm just up the road.

Its a good place for learning the basics.
